The San Francisco Mint Trade Dollar, identified by the "S" mint mark, was struck between 1873 and 1878 as part of the United States' effort to facilitate international trade, particularly with China and the broader Asian market. These coins were minted in large numbers and exported overseas, where they competed with popular silver coins like the Mexican Peso and Spanish 8 Reales.
